HONEST COMPARISON

Allio vs Dubsado: phone and texting for a busy portrait studio

Dubsado runs your paperwork beautifully. It doesn't run your studio's phone.

Allio is the CRM for portrait studios at $297 a month with the phone built in. Dubsado is $35 or $55 a month for proposals, contracts and invoices, without a listed phone line or built-in texting. Pay annually and that’s $335 or $525 a year, and both plans include three additional users. It’s a strong tool for proposals, contracts, invoices and automated email. A studio that books on the phone still needs a second system, or a Zapier connection, for both.

Allio is $297 per month. Card required. AI and phone usage is billed at cost, on top of the $297.

Where the phone fits, stated plainly

Dubsado describes its communication tools as two-way email through Gmail or Outlook, with canned templates and smart fields. Its scheduler sends confirmation and reminder emails, and its own help centre says text message reminders are not available. Its meeting notetaker records video calls and writes summaries, which is useful for consultations, but that’s a video meeting, not a phone line.

For a studio that books on the phone, that leaves three jobs to another tool: answering inbound calls as a team, texting enquiries from the studio number, and getting both onto the client’s record without someone retyping them. In Allio, a call to your studio number rings your team, can be recorded and transcribed, and lands on the client record next to every text, email and social message. The recording message is a setting you switch on. Before you switch on recording or transcription, set up the notice and consent your clients’ locations require. A recording announcement alone may not be enough.

The real monthly number, not the sticker price

Dubsado includes three additional users. A team that needs more moves into the 4 to 10 user band at $25 a month, so Premier becomes $80 a month, before anything for the phone. Calling and texting then come from somewhere else: a business phone service, a texting app, or a Zapier subscription plus an SMS provider. That’s two or three more logins and bills, and the calls still don’t appear on the client record by themselves.

Allio is $297 a month for the whole team, with the phone system, texting, the inbox and the client record in one place. AI and phone usage is billed at cost, on top of the $297, and email at wholesale rates, and we’d rather tell you that here than have you find it in month two.

Where Dubsado genuinely wins

Dubsado’s client-facing documents are among the most customisable in the category. You get branded client portals, a custom domain so clients see your name, custom CSS on forms, and proposals that bundle the contract, invoice and payment plan into one link. Its workflow builder is deep, and it’s built for one business owner who wants every client touchpoint to look exactly right. If your studio rarely takes calls and most enquiries arrive by email, that’s a real strength.

Which one you should pick

Choose Dubsado if

your enquiries mostly arrive by email, your team is four people or fewer (you plus three), and branded proposals and portals matter more to you than the phone.

Choose Allio if

your studio books on the phone, more than one person answers it, and you want calls, texts, email and social messages on one client record without paying for a separate phone system.

Questions studios ask before switching from Dubsado

How much does Dubsado cost per month?

Dubsado is $35 a month for Starter and $55 a month for Premier when billed monthly, or $335 and $525 a year billed annually. Both include three additional users. More users cost $25 to $60 a month extra depending on the team size, and each extra brand is $10 a month. Source: dubsado.com/pricing, checked 2026-10-22.

Can Dubsado send text messages?

Not natively. Dubsado’s help centre says its scheduler sends email reminders only and that text message reminders are not available. Studios that want texting connect Dubsado to a separate SMS service through Zapier, which is a Premier feature.

Does Dubsado have a phone system?

We couldn’t find one. No phone system appears on Dubsado’s pricing page or its official product information page. Client communication runs through connected Gmail or Outlook email.

Is Allio a good Dubsado alternative for photographers?

It is if your studio has staff and books on the phone. Allio puts calling, texting, email and Facebook and Instagram messages in one inbox per client, with no per seat fee. If you work alone and live in email, Dubsado may suit you better.

Can I move my clients from Dubsado to Allio?

Yes. Contacts import from a spreadsheet, and paid implementation can bring across more if you’d rather the team set it up for you.

Does texting work on the day I sign up?

Calling does. Texting from a new studio number needs carrier registration first, which can take a few weeks.
